I have been wrestling with the fact that it’s impossible to change people. I know I just stated the obvious, but as a pastor this is a tough reality that I need to embrace. Actually, as a human period; I must embrace this as a fact.
I am realizing that our job is not to change people, but we are called to be agents of change. But along with that, here is a question that I have been struggling with: “the changes that we want to see in others, are they genuine or are they selfish?” what if someone changes their demeanor, clothes, profile picture, language or even behavior, but their hearts are unchanged? is that the change that we are after?
Change that is only “skin deep” is not the change that the Bible talks about. Jesus says that we live out of our hearts and that is where true change takes place. It cannot be forced nor demanded; it only takes place when one yields himself to the genuine desire and need for change.
One of the the key evidence(s) for genuine change is when I don’t feel obligated to do “religious” things, but I have the desire to pursue godliness. Remember, scriptures tells us that it is the goodness of God that leads us to repentance.
